Daily Blog

i have been meaning for a long time to start a blog. Mostly for the reason of notes keeping, etc. But i hope others can find value in it. My intentions would be for all to use this BTR Blogosphere space as a place to keep tabs on what they are doing. Make it personal to yourselves. Talk about gaming, talk about sims, talk about your life, talk about ANYTHING you want to talk about. All that i would ask is if you reply to someone's blog to keep it on topic, and if discussions move off topic, to then start a thread on that topic.

Had a great race last night. nr2k3, Daytona fixed setups. Read about it here: http://www.runboard.com/btrclan.f2.t153

i have been enjoying the hell out of rFactor, driving that game more then anything else. i have been trying to sift through all of the mods and select the noteworthy ones worth the investment of time and energy. i have found an incredible amount of them, far more then i expected when i dove into the game.

Obviously, you guys know, i was a nr2k3 racer who found GTL and then devoted most of my time to those two games. i was deep into GTL for a few years. i really saw it as the most accurate version of sim i could find, and i loved the classic cars the game was focused on. i did reach a point though, where i got sick of the greasy feeling of the tires, as i began to think that it just didnt fit real world feeling compared to what i have experienced in my own past. i started looking at rFactor after discounting it as just a rough version of what GTL was. What finally opened my mind to rFactor's possibilites was the GT Historic mod. This is a mod which is basically a conversion of GTL. What grabbed me were the fantastic championships in the Single Player, and the more visceral and realistic grip that i could feel from the chassis and tires. i was also impressed with the sounds. The whole experience was just more visceral and engaging.

So, i decided to dive in deeper and see what rFactor had to offer. What i found was a very fractured community of modding. In the mods themselves, you will find the whole spectrum, from junk to incredible gems. To focus on the bright spots, what impresses me is the incredible depth of the better mods. There are so many mods that are entire games. Examples i would give would be Historics, Endurance Series, ILMS, VLN_2005, VHR.

i have tried to keep things somewhat organized and make it somewhat easier to sift through all of the content. i have posted info about mods here: http://www.runboard.com/btrclan.f14.t131

To bring things back to my current day, i am currently driving VHR and VHR IROC. i had yet to find a mod that did NASCAR well. VHR does about the best job of it that i have found in rFactor, and VHR IROC gives something truly special - a near mirror of Papyrus nr2k3 feeling in physics. The IROC cars have alot of pitch and yaw, just like i search for, and what i love about nr2k3. The VHR mods have great looking models for cars, and the tracks look way better then nr2k3.
Here are links for VHR -
VHR website:
http://www.vhracing.net/VHR-Stockcar/Main/The%20News.htm
VHR has it's own downloads section, but i also uploaded to btr:
http://www.btr.clanbtf.net/rFactor/Mods/VHRmods/
You will need to install the main VHR v7.0 to use the mods, such as IROC:

Image
http://www.btr.clanbtf.net/rFactor/Mods/VHRmods/VHR09_IROC_2.0.exe

Also in the last few days, i have been spending alot of time in ILMS v2.77. i have been racing with Ivan, from Italy. i have had a ton of great races with him, as he is very fast, and races very clean. i have given him admin to the BTR servers, so don't be surprised about seeing him as an admin.

Great new mod released.

Toyota Supra Mark IV.
http://www.virtualr.net/toyota-supra-mkiv-10-released/

It is another Stock Automobile mod released by the same people that did the impressive Corvette C6. This mod is perhaps even more fun to drive. Again we are given the opportunity to drive on street tires and experience lots of tail out action. The mod is great. It is so impressive that as time goes on, rFactor continues to grow in quality.

Been playing this mod all day now... sheesh...

Today i had a race that made a nice looking replay. Ran NOS 2007 Tourist with 10 AI at 105%. The replay shows how great looking the track and car are, and the great physics and damage modeling of the game. Unfortunately, as light ran out, i thought i would be able to do ok letting my memory make up for what the headlights weren't.... i was wrong, hence the good display of the damage modeling... emoticon

Here is a great looking replay that shows what the game and this mod can produce.

To view this replay you'd need:

The track:

And the game if you dont have it of course...

GTL comes to rFactor! emoticon i speak of the feeling of this car. The tires have the exact feel of the GTC76 class in GTL.

Download the car here:

Re: Daily Blog

Ok, it has been a long time since i have done any updates.

Most of the servers havent been used recently, so they are down to allow resources to be used elsewhere. However, any mod, any server, anything you ever need, i will put a server up at any time by request in irc or here if i catch it in time. (irc is always the fastest way to contact me.)

Recent mods and servers i have been enjoying:

The Peugeot 207 S2000. Makes for some great rally action. i particularly like the rally car vs the asphalt car, as its tall stance and long travel makes me feel indestructable out on the rally courses. The sound and feeling of the gravel tires, especially on asphalt is great, very accurate. The most accurate i have felt in probably any sim/mod.

i setup a BTR 207 S2000 v1.1 rally server, the track pack is here: http://www.btr.clanbtf.net/rFactor/Locations/rF_RallyTrax.zip

The mod and more info can be found here:
http://www.virtualr.net/peugeot-207-s2000-1-1-released/
Another Download source is here:
http://www.btr.clanbtf.net/rFactor/Mods/207s2000_v1.1_Complete.exe
And some high resolution skins:
http://www.btr.clanbtf.net/rFactor/Mods/207s2000_v1.1_1024.exe

Another server i have been having a ton of fun on, is the BTR PCC07 vs V8 Factor v1.3
This server is running the incredible Porsche Carrera Cup Series 2007 mod: http://www.rfactorcentral.com/detail.cfm?ID=PCC%202007
Which you can download here:
http://www.btr.clanbtf.net/rFactor/Mods/PCC_2007_Setup.exe

and the Australian V8 Super Cars - V8Factor v1.3 which you can see here:
http://www.virtualr.net/v8factor-bathurst-1-3-released/
Since it requires the original v1.0, plus the v1.3 update, i created a single download which you can grab here:
http://www.btr.clanbtf.net/rFactor/Mods/V8factor_v1.3full.zip
or, choose to use the two original .exe's found here:
http://www.btr.clanbtf.net/rFactor/Mods/V8Factor_2006_v1.exe
http://www.btr.clanbtf.net/rFactor/Mods/V8F_2006_Patch_All-in-1.3.exe
i have been mostly running some Aussie trax, and a few USA tracks found in these two packs:
http://www.btr.clanbtf.net/rFactor/Locations/rF_AussieTrax.zip
http://www.btr.clanbtf.net/rFactor/Locations/rF_ALMS+tracks.zip
The racing is intensely close. It is amazing how these two very cars are just tens and thousands of a second from each other, and to it in two very different ways. The V8 cars have incredible thrust and top speed, and can barely find enough grip to launch out of corners. They tend to be too loose rear, and too tight front, pushing in turns. i have been working on setups to make them handle better. The Porsches however, go about their business in a very controlled manner. They are definately the much easier of the two to drive. i also like the fact that there is not much setup choices for these GT3's. i love mods that work well out of the box, but don't have much setup choices, as it makes driving the mod about driving skill, and not setup skill. emoticon In the end, you have two very, very different cars that are both stunningly reproduced, feel very accurate (especially in the PCC07, simply one of the best mods i have driven in any game), and yet are very close in lap times making for some very interesting racing.

Try them out!
