2009 NASCAR Chase for the Cup!

So, who are your picks?? Have just one? Have a couple? Please feel free to offer up all of your opinions here.

i am very torn this year. i would always prefer to throw my weight behind one driver, and give him my total undying commitment to support him to the end. This year is so tough for me though. i am torn in so many directions. And it is all about TIMING.

Were time infinite, i would go with my long time and normal pick - Jimmy Johnson. He is my single favorite driver for the following reasons:
1. i think he is the most professional, yet aggressive driver on the track.
2. Consistency.
3. The team of him and Chad Knaus is just the wonder team. Pocono is the perfect example. Name another team that can go, what 3 or more laps down? Replace a carbuerator, spark plugs, spark plug wires, battery, etc on pit road, and STILL come back to what was it, an 11th or 13th on the lead lap finish?? SuperMan dna in both of them.
4. 4 in a row!!!! Who would/could want to deny a team this respectable 4 in a row? Just for the historical significance of it!

But i am torn by the timing here. Mark Martin signing with Hendrick Motorsports for another two full years definately reduces this sharp pain i feel. emoticon i have gained so much respect for Mark in the last few years, and he is now driving a Chevy, and i just feel i know more about him now. For the following reasons i would like to see Mark Martin win the Chase:
1. 50 years old!
2. He has been at it for so long, been a great driver for so long, and only just missed it. In my eyes he DESERVES a chamionship.
3. His performance this year. i know he is with a strong team, but you can look in his eyes. He knows he is the best he has ever been also. His enthusiasm is so contagious.
4. Same as reason #1 for Jimmy Johnson. He is very professional. However, he is aggressive, but above all The Gentleman's racer. He won't push someone out of the way for position or points. He demands of himself to win on his driving merits alone, not the strength of his front bumper. That is the highest respect i can put on any driver in any form of racing.

Tony Stewart. Reasons why i would love to see Tony Stewart win the Chase:
1. His first year of owner/driver.
2. He got BOTH of his cars into the Chase
3. Just the ability for him and his organization (w/Haas) to go from where Haas was in 2007 to where they are as two teams today is mind boggelling. The cost and the engineering, and the hardware needed today is just incredible. His relationship with Hendrick and basically being a Hendrick satellite team is the smartest chess move anyone could do. i never saw that chess move coming. i remember watching his press conference of him announcing his new venture and his goals. i remember thinking, "God Tony, i respect what you are trying to do, but you are leaving a strong team, in what i consider to be the most competitive time in NASCAR's history. You man, are a true maverick! You are also partially insane..." His performance has been outstanding. His pick of Ryan Newman was perfect also. Great racer, they make a great team together. Ryan would be doing even better if he hadn't had so much bad luck this year.

So, this is so hard for me to pin down. i cannot make a choice based on how i feel today. To bring myself to make that choice, i think i have to put myself in my own shoes the day after the Chase is completed.

What if Tony doesn't do it. i am disappointed. Not in him, but in the missed opportunity for a new team and a new driver/owner team to win the Chase in their first year.

What if Jimmy doesn't do it? i am let down. i think he is the best driver in the game right now, and has been for some years. He has surpassed his mentor, the great Jeff Gordon. i am bummed about the historical significance of winning Four in a Row. If he doesn't win this year, he still has more Championships in him, at least i am not phased by the loss knowing that.

What if Mark Martin doesn't do it? i am completely, completely gutted. i'll be physically sick, i can see it now. i'll need to sit down and focus keeping my dinner in me. Definately, the fact that he signed for two more years has taken alot of pressure off of me regarding this. However, he is the hottest he has ever been, RIGHT NOW! Not next year, right now. He deserves it more then anyone in the game right now. He is the cleanest fast driver out there. He has come close, but hasn't sealed the deal. He HAS TO DO THIS.

If Tony wins, i am very impressed. If Jimmy wins, i am so very glad for him, and for the significance of his win. If Mark wins, i'll cry. If he does't win, i'll sob.

Re: 2009 NASCAR Chase for the Cup!

My one and only true choice is Mark Martin. I've followed him since the 80s. Watched him come up short to many of my other favorites like Earnhardt and Labonte. All the while I could never root for him like I would have loved to since he always drove a Ford. Even with that there was many times that I would have loved to have seen him get the cup but he just seemed to always be up against someone that I was rooting for a bit more. When he signed on with Hedricks I had hoped then that this would give him one more if not his last shot at the title. Seeing him be here once again and seeing him in a Chevy just warms my heart more than anything else in NASCAR right now. The only thing is (like earnhardt in Daytona) we've been here before. I am truly scared to death of sheer disappointment. Each week I watch and just keep my fingers crossed.

As far as Jimmie, I have never been a fan of his. Guess I'm just to stuck in my old anti Gordon ways. When he first came on board I felt he was just a Gordon protege. AND he seemed to be more than friends with Gordon, if you know what I mean (wink wink). Although I know that that was/is probably completely my own imagination. Seriously though I had always felt Gordon popped on the scene a rich kid that had it all handed to him on a platter and every time I seen Jimmie just dominate so early in his career (in a Hendricks car and Gordon's teammate/employee) it just made me see Gordon all over again. Although I still feel that way to an extent it has lessened over the years.

Now Stewart. Man what a hell of a racer. I have always been a fan of Stewarts. Even since he first stepped foot on a NASCAR track. He reminded my so much of Earnhardt it was ridiculous, the same with Harvick. And how can you form a new team and be leading the points going into the chase? Normally when you start a new team it takes years just to break into the top 10 much less lead the points. But he has had his cups. I'm all for Mark this year. No one else.

And just for those who might be interested to know, my pick of Harvick's car in our league is due to the fact that he is in fact in Earhardt's old ride and because of his "early" Earnhardt type/style racing ability and attitude. That was before NASCAR leashed and ruined him.
