Re: BTR 2012 race results and discussion

Got around to watching the replay of the Bristol race just now. Had a few pretty interesting moments, hehe. That first spin DS took coming off a turn where he overcorrected... I skated by juuuuust at the perfect moment to avoid getting clipped. Tried taking a screenshot of it to post here to show just how close it was, but I guess f12 ain't the screenshot key like it is in Quake2.

Also, later in the race after Gator retired,... looked like you were aiming dead at the wall on purpose, DS, haha. Flipped it up against the fence, landed on your roof, and rolled back onto the wheels before smacking the inside wall. I'll go ahead an nominate it as the best crash so far this year. emoticon

LOL dude you have no idea !!!
I uploaded the servers replay instead of mine hoping it wouldn't be "TO" obvious. emoticon I actually did it twice I think. Gator was spec'n and I figured he was able to tell just from watching. It was hilarious actually. 1 lap down, less than 20 to go, no way to pass and race for the win, tires shot, sucker was pushing straight for it so i kept the foot on the gas hoping to break the rear loose and graze it, still kept heading straight for it so i knew i was going to hit unless i just stabbed the brakes. So at the very last 1/10th of a second I guess I ran out of patience and had another "moment" and fed that wall all it could eat emoticon . Never thought it would flip though. Man that was horrendous. That sucker flipped all over the place hit the wall a couple of moer times and kept running. Got back to the pits, they hammered on it for a while and it still had all its speed !!!! Of course I beleve it was the bow tie on the front end that kept it going emoticon Of course I fealt bad afterwards thinking I shouldn't have done that, buuut, I wouldn't trade that replay with the car still running afterwards for nothing.

As far as screeshots its "Prt Scr" then save as jpeg.

I can upload my replay so you can see some of the peddle/steering work that goes into racing that track with wheel and all driving aids turns off. Believe me, it's brutal, but fun as hell !!! emoticon

Re: BTR 2012 race results and discussion

Decided to hop on the CTS server tonight and practice a bit for the upcoming truck race at Martinsville Revamped 2009. Servers were acting crazy though. Seems like they were probably fine before I got there, connected okay, server didn't freak out at all. But then I switched the track to Martinsville, set the practice time to 35mins and happy hour to 5mins, set the AI to 12 cars at 98%, then started the game. It wouldn't let me drive though. I just sat there for a minute or two like it was loading up and getting ready to allow me to jump in and drive, and then... POOF, disconnected me. I tried immediately reconnecting and it sat there saying "synchronizing" for a minute or so, and then disconnected again saying something about "timed out" or "throughput at unacceptable level" or whatever it says. I tried reconnecting about 4 or 5 times and each time it did that same thing. So then I tried going over the cup server, did the same thing CTS was doing (not surprising though, same box, figured it would). So I went and did something else, then came back and tried again maybe 45mins to an hour later... It connected just like it did the first time, but then wouldn't let me drive again, and disconnected me again. So again... I waited maybe another 45mins, did something else, came back. This time it finally let me connect and start driving, but while I'm driving around, it's like the server was lagging REALLY bad. Like every 30 seconds all the AI cars would disappear for about 5-10 seconds and then reappear again. It did that a BUNCH of times. Then finally it did it again, and when the AI cars reappeared, one of them was RIGHT UNDER ME. Our two trucks were like siamese twins joined at the hood, and it flipped us about 8 times in the air. After that I just said to hell with it and abandoned the race.

So I dunno what was going on there, but hopefully this kinda thing won't still be happening come next week.

Re: BTR 2012 race results and discussion

Thought I'd mention this here for anyone who might not catch the discussion about it in IRC...

I'm taking the initiative to try to organize a 3rd series for this season. We've got a cup cars series and and CTS trucks series. Thought it might be cool to have a series featuring some non-mainstream racing, things you might see at some local backwoods short track or dirt track. Was talking with Busche last night about it, and the ideas we've had so far was race a mixture mods in this particular series. For now, I guess we'll do the Hobby Stock mod (featuring Novas, Sleds, and Monte Carlos), the Outlaw CTS physics mod, and maybe one other mod (possibly Late Model v2 or something else). To start with, we're gonna run a shorter series, probably something like 12 races in all. If this series gets more than 2 two racers regularly, might do another series after it to carry on through the end of the year, but for now we're gonna stick with 12 just as a trial run (don't wanna get a huge schedule worked out if we're only gonna end up racing 2 or 3 races before it fizzles out). So far, we've decided to run them on Saturday nights, so I guess for now the official proposed dates and times for the races will be every Saturday night with practice starting at 8pm est just like the cup and CTS series. I guess we'll call the series "Saturday Night Short-Track Series", unless somebody's got a better name for it. I'm still in the process of finding 12 suitable tracks. Got a few local Georgia tracks I've found so far that look pretty fun, but theres still a TON of tracks out there I'd like to check out before narrowing it down to the final 12 picks. So if anyone else is interested in seeing a couple particular tracks on the schedule, post here with a download link to it so I can grab it and get it put on the list of tracks.

Dunno exactly what we're gonna do for a server yet. Talked a little to DS about it last night, and he seemed to approve of the idea of BTR branching out into other mods. Unfortunately, I don't have a decent enough connection to run the server from my own machine, so I suppose we'll just use DS's box somehow. Either we'll have to convert one of the existing IP addresses that isn't used much over to a server for this series, or he'll have to set up a new port and server for this series, probably the latter from what he said last night.

DS says he won't be able to admin and organize this series himself due to time constraints, which means at some point he and I will get together to teach me how to admin things and run races as the head honcho. This is also a good thing, because at some point later down the road, I'll probably also take over admining some of the series races for a couple races to take some of the burden off him. As it stands, he's the ONLY guy doing it, which means if something comes up for him and he can't make it to a race... there won't be a race that night. Not really fair to him, so hopefully I can help out. I know a little about what it's like, it's always more fun when you can just hop in the game and play without having to worry about keeping track of everything and being admin.

Once again, if you got any track ideas for this series, gimme a holler. Dirt or paved, doesn't matter. Would prefer to keep the tracks small, maybe 1/2 mile or shorter, but if you know of a good obscure 1 mile or larger track, throw it out here too. Might be fun to have one or two larger tracks in the mix.

AWESOME race tonight! California Revamped Night 2009. If you missed this one, you missed out, buddy. Lots of close racing, lots of lead changes, lots of slips, slides, and spins. Gonna be an excellent replay to watch.

Just watched it. Great replay! Lots of action. In the middle of the race, I remembered seeing what looked like smoke coming from BEHIND pit road, and I was like "WTF, are the haulers on fire!?!" Turns out it was that new guy peeling out from behind the garage. Kinda weird, if I recall correctly, I think that actually brought out a caution right there, because I don't seem to remember anyone using one of their free caution flags before that. Oh well, I suppose it benefited all of us anyway, pretty sure I was getting to the point where I was having to get conservative with the throttle exiting the turns because my tires were getting worn down.

For my own part, I can say that I did drive a pretty good race, only a couple of small mistakes in driving. But as good as my car was, and as clean as I was driving it, I still gotta chalk this one up as luck having a lot to do with why I was able to get out front in the final laps. DS had the better car all night, and I was mainly keeping up with him only because I was benefiting from the draft. In a drag race off the turns side by side, he probably would've had me beat 8 times out of 10. The luck I'm speaking of seems to be that it looked kinda like I might've had fresher tires than DS in particular. Last several laps, looked like he wasn't able to get 100% into the throttle in the middle of turns like he was doing when we were fighting for 1st a little earlier. Also looked like maybe Gator was being a little conservative on the gas too coming off that turn 4 when I made the pass on the outside for the lead, like maybe he didn't realize how fast I was closing on him. I dunno, maybe he wasn't hitting it so hard trying to keep it from drifting out into the wall which tends to happen right there if you aren't careful.

On one hand, I won't deny that it's awesome to win so many races like this. I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it. You like to win when you do something, that's just human nature. Sometimes it's skill and just good hard driving that gets the win for me. Other times, it's a combo of hard driving, pit strategy, and luck... like tonight I'd say. So yeah, I like to win, and maybe I'll keep on winning, we'll see. Gonna ride this WIN train as far as it'll go I guess.

BUT...

On the other hand, I am starting to feel a little guilty about it. Hopefully the rest of you guys aren't getting too frustrated or anything. I honestly think so far, it's been a WHOLE lotta luck for me. And eventually my lucks gonna take a nose-dive. Eventually I won't be able to get a win to save my life. Anyway, not saying all this to be condescending or anything, mainly just saying this because I truly enjoy racing with you guys and don't want you to give up and stop racing. I like winning, but I don't wanna win if it's gonna make people leave, that would suck. Like I said, I gotta a eerie feeling my lucks gonna take a turn for the worst sooner or later, and I REEEEALLY get that feeling the most when I go looking further down the schedule at some of the tracks we'll be racing over the next several months. Feels like I've gotten a little better at driving since last season when y'all kicked my butt every week. But theres only so much luck a keyboard cowboy like me can wring out of a kidnapped leprachaun, and I might've just gotten the last drop here tonight, hehe. emoticon I better find me another one quick.

Basically, just wanna say that hopefully I'm not being one of those obnoxious punks that gloats over winning at a video game. I don't think I am, but I dunno. So if I've ever said anything after winning that made me look like an A-hole, I apologize.

It was a great race.

i don't think you are being an unkind victor at all Focalor, no worries.

The cars can get real loose aero-wise, especially on worn tires at Cali. At the end, i did not even see you coming. i was loose and trying to save it from the outside wall.

Enjoy it while you can, luck does come and go. And just the memory of the wins are enough to keep you going through down times.

Re: BTR 2012 race results and discussion

Seems like I've gotten a lot more experience this season and have learned how to set up cars and the controls a lot better than I did last year. Last year I think I was probably working against myself relying a little too much on the steering assistance. I've had more time to tweak the controls and play around with it figuring out what works best for the way I drive. I really don't use one specific control setting for every track. Some tracks I'll use a little more or a little less steering assist, just depends on the track, usually never anything over 40%. As I drop the steering assist lower than 40%, I'll usually raise the input momentum setting on steering from 0% to something higher to make the steering wheel turn slower, otherwise the wheel will cut all the way left instantly and I'll start sliding straight ahead and slaughter the outside edges of the tires.

Anyway, with that said, feels like I've actually gotten to where I can really compete with you wheelers on the tracks with a smaller turn radius. Probably still not exactly on par with you guys, put pretty close. So don't count me out at Martinsville just yet. From all the test laps we've run so far, seems like DS has always found a way to get a few laps faster than me. But that place does tend to be a fender brawl. A lot can happen between the 1st green and the checkers. emoticon

Dunno if I'm gonna push the issue though. Seems like my brakes with a keyboard setup don't slow me down approaching turns the same way it does for you guys with pedals. Don't really wanna go hammering someone from behind getting too aggressive. Pretty hard to total a trucks motor in a wreck there unless you're unlucky enough to get spun nose-first into the end of one of the pit walls. And it ain't really fast track, so having a little body damage doesn't completely ruin aerodynamics and slow you off the pace like it does at faster tracks. But still, I've won plenty, no need to go getting greedy, hitting someone, and knocking them out of contention. I don't think short tracks with trucks are really my strong point. Just gonna coast, stay out of trouble, maybe lead a lap or two if the opportunity is there, and try to finish on the lead lap.

Should be a lot of fun. Remember thinking last year that Martinsville was small, slow, and probably gonna be a snooze-fest. But it actually turned out to be probably the most fun race of that season.
